MacArthur Chambers

Originally constructed as the Queensland headquarters of the Australian Mutual Provident Society (AMP) – a financial services company providing superannuation, banking and investment products, MacArthur Chambers was designed by Brisbane Architect Francis Richard Hall and built by George A Stronach between 1931 and 1934 and officially opened in March 1934.

The building is easily recognisable as a heritage piece right in the centre of Brisbane CBD. The base of the building is constructed with granite. Before it was constructed this granite was tested by the University of Queensland who declared it ‘the finest granite in existence’ due to its immense strength per square inch.

There is an emblematic statuary above the main entrance, which was carved from Sicilian marble, it was erected to illustrate the AMP societies motto “Amicus certus in re incerta” which translates to (a certain friend in uncertain times). Although no longer an AMP building the statue remains.

The building was used as the headquarters of the Allied Forces during the second World War due to its central location and reinforced concrete roof. After the second world war the building was reopened and named MacArthur Chambers after American Commander in Chief of the Allied Forces for the Pacific Region; General Douglas MacArthur. The building was then added to the Queensland Heritage Register in 1992.

The MacArthur Chambers building, and its surrounding city block were redeveloped in the late 1990’s. This created the shopping centre now known as MacArthur Central. Currently, MacArthur Chambers holds the MacArthur Chambers Hotel, MacArthur Museum, and an Apple Store.
